THE FESTIVAL

Henge sites were often associated with the dead and may have been places where people communed with their ancestors in Samhain rituals (Trevarthen 2010).

Divination was a common practice performed during Samhain and used with apples and hazelnuts. This time was important to honor the gods, be thankful, and partake in rituals preparing for the new year. The most important deities connected to Samhain were females who represented life and death, magic and transformation, protection and destruction (MacLeod 2011).

The new moon was associated with Samhain (MacLeod 2011).

Feasting was an important aspect of Samhain, even among the poorest. Apples and hazelnuts were included in the feasts (MacLeod 2011).
